Classic: Every gym in this city is pushing its members to strap a tape around their chest, put on a watch, and join the heart-rate-monitor craze. As every fitness aficionado knows, it’s the only way to accurately measure your exertion level and spend specifically timed intervals in your anaerobic and aerobic zones-as long as you don’t mind being married to your watch.
Future Classic: One caveat regarding the old: a heart-rate monitor is little help if you don’t have accurate heart-rate targets. The heart-rate-zone pyramid you see on posters around the gym is based entirely on age, and because fitness is so relative, the average for your age group can be extremely inaccurate on an individual level, causing countless people to train “blind.” That’s where a bright blue mask, a computer on wheels, and a taskmaster-together known as CO2 testing-come in. It’s so precise, and so hot right now, that Google has started offering free testing to its employees. “We’re a population of engineers, and they like numbers,” says Josh Glynn, Google’s corporate fitness specialist. The only major gym in the city with CO2 testing is Equinox, whose top-level staff were individually trained by the machine’s manufacturer-useful because the data are worthless without a professional trainer to interpret the test’s results and craft a series of workouts for you. This is the ideal way to maximize your workout, whether by increasing fat oxidation or building endurance. |
